I've been married for 13 years. I've never been what you call a ladies man. I was usually looking for relationships and was always trying to be the nice guy, ie, "not get any"
But I'm happily married now, and have been for 13 years. There have been stretches where it's been rough, but that is normal.
What I do that I think makes our marriage pretty good is we have a traditional marriage. My wife stays at home and takes care of the house and kids. I go to work.
I help with the housework a bit, but it's mostly up to her. I pay the bills and control the checkbook. When she did work before kids, we had separate checking accounts. Now we have one, and I control it. If she wants to spend money, she asks, and I usually say ok.
She looks to me for strength and knowlege, I look to her to raise our kids and support me.
When we fight, I usually let it go. If she gets mad, I just ignore it. It is not that we don't try to work it out, but I'm not going to play that "Are you mad?" game, nor will I keep asking "What's wrong". I may ask once, and then drop it.
My dad always told me when you get in an fight don't bug the woman or grovel back. Just play cool and walk away. If she tells you to leave, or she leves, look at her in a cool fashion and say, "bye".
She'll comes crawling back. If you ARE in the wrong, apologize. If you got drunk and did something stupid, apologize. But try to act like an adult. Know your responsibility, and she will know hers. Traditional roles.
