Cern scientist: 'Physics built by men'

This is a complicated one, and I don't know the specifics at CERN, but can speak to my own experience as someone with a PhD in physics.

I personally haven't seen gender quotas play out in my industry. I know that some government departments have them, but in the private sector they simply can't afford to not have the best of the best there. And physics isn't really a field where you can just sort of float on through.

Something I do see, though, is some older men who are struggling to adapt to a new culture in the world of physics. They worked most of their careers in an environment where the only women in the office were the receptionists, and I think a lot of them miss the men's only culture. I've worked with quite a few older men who seem to be genuinely shocked when I don't respond to their flirting or fetch them a coffee. I don't blame them for not being thrilled about my presence, but times have changed and I'm not apologetic for being there.

I can't say whether or not this guy falls into this category of man I've encountered, but there certainly are more than a few guys around who genuinely see the influx of women in their industry as an affront to them. Some of them are far too quick to jump on the MRA train and blame the quota bogeyman. In my experience, most of the time it's unwarranted.

At a workshop organised by Cern, Prof Alessandro Strumia of Pisa University said that "Physics was invented and built by men, it's not by invitation".

When the BBC contacted Prof Strumia he said: "People say that physics is sexist, physics is racist. I made some simple checks and discovered that it wasn't, that it was becoming sexist against men and said so."

Last month, Prof Jocelyn Bell Burnell told the BBC she believed that unconscious bias against women prevented them from getting jobs in physics research.

Currently in academia in the sciences. There is a push to hire based on sex, color, etc. Unfortunately, it means that higher quality candidates get passed over because of characteristics they cannot change.

Also: they mention Sir Thomas Hunt at the end of the article. That was a hatchet job. Turns out he was making a joke about himself that an unethical journalist decided to make hay with.

Here's an interesting article concerning one man's presentation on the differences in gender and how it is affecting current physicists. The presenter makes the case that science is currently under attack from feminists who are compelling employers to hire women over men, creating a problem of sexism. I personally have no insight into the reality of this situation and would love anyone involved in academics or science professions to weigh in!
