Its really pretty stupid when you think about it. The backup is only the backup because she already has a man she prefers. She's only endangering her preferred relationship by keeping the backup in orbit.

If her backup disrupts things with her preferred mate and prompts him to leave her then what is she left with? A man that would be willing to drop everything for her if she asked him to. What a catch! Once they're actually together she will quickly start to resent him.

The system only works if the backup man remains the backup. When the time comes for that backup man to become the main man in her life the whole thing goes to shit. If she wanted this backup guy that bad she would have left her husband for him. Women feel absolutely no remorse about upgrading on their own terms like this, its basic hypergamy.
