People use pretence of cultural enlightenment/introspection/"unique growth experience" to justify going somewhere for the sole purpose of partying and self-indulgence. The tourism industry is packaged and sold escapism so people can get their feelings fix just as one would with drugs. Like with anything most dumbfuck 20somethings do it's for the purpose of avoiding reality and feeling good. In real life and for the rest of their lives they don't want to face their impending mediocrity, slamming into the wall, bleeding a trust fund they didn't deserve/earn or failing to become better people with constructive lives.

There seems to be a lot more young Americans traveling these days. When I was in college, the only people my age that traveled abroad were ones that had rich parents. The rest were in the armed forces.

Nowadays, I see a lot of people in their 20s traveling abroad under the guise of "studying abroad." This would not be possible if it wasn't for the wide availability of easy credit. I've met people who are 20yrs old and living abroad, with no real idea of what they're going to do with their life, and paying for it all with a student loan that they have no idea how to pay off.

When I say that…

Travelers are mostly vapid, gutless and intoxicated.

It’s my cognitive dissonance remarking on the differences between the noble philosophies travelers claim and what I’ve actually observed.

I have the feeling this gentleman gleaned his observations by inserting himself squarely into the middle of the most touristy hubs he could find. There's a distinct difference between a tourist and a traveler.

I travel for sex, cheap food and alcohol, nice weather and to escape from reality. Experiencing different cultures and places is just a bonus. When I tell people why I travel, I usually leave out the sex part because sex tourism is frowned upon. What did you expect? People are people everywhere. You can't expect more from travelers than from anyone else.

What's guaranteed is that when you travel you meet a bunch of people you otherwise wouldn't have met.

Guys sounds like kind of a douche.

If I had to chose one word to describe men I met traveling it has to be, indecisive.

Sounds like they're choosing to enjoy themselves and not play the rat race.

This is bullshit man. I travel 50-100 thousand miles a year. The answer to this is easy: Don't hang out with other Americans, and don't hang out in touristy spots. I've met some of the coolest people in the world traveling, but Americans are always the worst.
