The correct action is to keep frame. Your answer is good because:

  • It addresses her feelings (not logical argument) - Change her mood not her mind
  • It's indirect (subcommunication vs overt)

However, your answer does not address the following:

  • She is fishing for validation and you are rewarding this behavior when you should be punishing it! (unless you want more of this)
  • It is a form of supplication: "You're the best honey" - you semi-avoided this trap by being indirect and framing yourself as the decision maker

As others have pointed out, you are leaving yourself open to a reframe. At the meta-level she raised a hoop and you jumped through it. "Validate me" - "Ok, I chose you"

I would say your answer is perfect if the girl needs that validation. That pre-supposes that he's been in this relationship for 2+ years and he knows that this girl has insecurities (red flag!)

This guy failed because his frame is broken:

I was convinced I could debate my way past this

we have a great relationship, and being truthful can't hurt...it'll show her I'm honest.

He's overanalysing and thinking he can handle this situation logically.

Anyway, 90% of the time it doesn't matter. It is enough to give a good enough answer, or ignore, or change the subject. Most important is to keep frame.

It's when you control the social dynamic and they operate in your "reality". Apologising when she gets angry for a stupid reason (like baiting you into lying to feed her ego, as in OP's example) is breaking frame because she is dictating the social dynamic.Treat her how she deserves to be treated, not how she wants to be treated.

I've never been in this situation. But I would imagine that you could answer honestly just so long as you held frame if she melts down. You would be put in one of two situations. 1) She still has sex with you, but it puts her on notice to decrease the frequency of such shit tests as they will be detrimental to her self-esteem. Or 2) You lose the sex, in which case you immediately focus on other women, putting her on notice that such shit tests will be detrimental to her self esteem AND it will cause a loss of a major currency- namely your attention.
