*Male lion, not lions. That one lion that is used for mating.
Meanwhile all other lions have to hunt on their own.
[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No you're wrong. The strongest alpha male eats most of the food and has mating rights. Male lions always dominate the females and eat most of the prey. This includes all male lions in the pride, not just the alpha since they are all brothers (part of the same coalition).

Male lions also help in the hunt if the kill is particulary dangerous, like elephants or giraffes.

Thanks for stating this, the presence of lions on this list was really making me question everything else if I didn't already know it.

Not really sure about the information you are providing here. But I remember watching at tv, (Discorvery Channel or Animal Planet) about lions and their societies, wich are formed mainly in 3 ways: Group 1: 1 Alpha male with multiple females. Group 2: A group of females and maybe their offspring (so also young males) Group 3: A group of "beta" males with no females.

Male lions form coalitions usually consisting of 2-6 lions that were part of the same litter. After reaching adulthood they are driven out of their birth pride and they live as nomads until taking over a pride. So a pride has a group of male lions living with females; the alpha has the mating rights and all males guard the territory. Prides with single alpha males are rare because they are vulnerable to being taken over by other coalitions with more number of males. There is a Discovery show called 'Brothers in Blood' that follows a coalition of male lions from their birth to death in the African savanna and it provides great insight into their lives.

This whole thing is largely cherry picked BS. Elephants in particular strike me as more complex than it states.

I've always believed that if humans put into practice what lions do, that is how things should naturally be. A man should be able to have a harem of women who serve him and he in turn breeds them and provides protection for them.

Who the fuck thinks lions are matriarchal? Lions are patriarchal. In a lion pride, females hunt most of the food and males are always the first to eat. They fight for food and eat most of the flesh of their prey, mostly hunted down by females.
That's not to assume male lions can't hunt by themselves; they spend most of their lives as nomads away from the females and engage in brutal fights with other males to take over a pride. If that pride has cubs, male lions almost always kill the cubs to ensure their mating rights with the females. Lionesses who are too protective of their cubs might get killed too. It's true that lionesses spend all their lives in the birth pride but lions are patriarchal.
Hyenas can't suffocate their prey, they rip off their prey alive eating out its abdomen until it has a gruesome death. Male hyenas have pathetic lives and their teeth are slowly worn out from chewing the bones since females eat most of the flesh. Most matriarchal animals are nasty and barbaric.

Wow that's great hyenas have a stronger bite force so they could be effective dogs that guard the territory. In groups they could chase away the lions.

Also ants or bees....queen is more like a slave that is used only for reproduction. There is no decision on her side.

Hornets purge members that are no longer needed in the colony. From dumping excessive larvae to starving their queen.

If we didnt have technology and were still dependant on hunting to stay alive, watch how fast women shut the fuck up about equality.

We can have a agreement, use violence only on females. Happy ending

I remember being in a room of about 200 people, which was a college biology class. The teacher was describing mating rituals of different species and how the male had to jump through numerous hoops to mate with the female, doing all these mating dances, showing colors, and shit, and if he made even one little mistake, she would kill him by biting his head off. I remember numerous dudes in the class kept scoffing. It was like every guy in the class could relate and was sitting there, "No kidding."

Would be great if some of them end up thinking that those mating dances are fucking stupid and not worth the reward at all.

That happened with me. I would be shocked if I'm the only one.

Humans pretend there is a patriarchy in order to play the victim card and get more provisions out of the men.
They got it wrong about the lion. The females are the ones that hunt for the pride. The males do hunt but not often. The males protect the pride from other males.
Whenever a new male lion(s) take over a pride, it will immediately kill off all the cubs. This will force the females to go into heat again.
