I don't personally feel sad, but I can understand their emotional pain. I can put myself in their shoes and sort of relate to their situation.

But it's more than that. Empathy bites me in the ass often. For instance, say three of us are presenting something to our company execs. Each of us also want to look good in the executives eyes, because we are all in competitive positions.

One of the people there are extremely nervous and is doing a terrible job at presenting. Now, it's in my favor to take charge here, and sort of throw him under the bus by taking over and shining a light on his incompetence. Most people have no problem doing this. In a competitive environment, most people would do this. However, my empathy bites me in the ass, and I feel bad for the guys situation, and I'll even go as far as intentionally dumb myself down and make some minor mistakes, and even praise his work, in hopes of building the nervous guy's confidence and pull him out of that nervous pit he's in.

In reality, it doesn't help me, and in fact hurts me a bit. It's certainly not the most optimal strategy. The best strategy is to take advantage of his weakness. However, I can't help it.

Which sucks, because I know most people are more than willing to throw me under the bus. Heck, I've had people try to do it to me even after I've helped them. A more TRP example would be I would be the center of a social situation, and know a guy with me is really nervous and sort of is getting social anxiety, especially since his GF and the other girls are paying way more attention to me. So I'll go ahead and back off a bit, say some stupid shit, involve him a little more, and even take some blows at myself -- basically getting him out of his shell and help him lose his anxiety by lowering my social value. Soon as I do that, that guy has NO problem to start giving me shit and start doing the AMOG game with me.

So I've sort of learned to recognize my empathy and intentionally ignore it. Because it really doesn't help most situations in a dog-eat-dog world.
