This is why you should never ever ever white knight for women who are in abusive relationship.

They are fundamentally disturbed people who seek out dysfunctional relationships.

If say, your neighbor is being abused and you wanna do something ? Call the cops. Always call the cops because that's what the fucking cops are there for.

Here is another example.

I have (had) a female friend, who had a flamingly gay male friend call her and tell her he had sliced himself up, and he was trying to commit suicide.

So what did she do? She speeds over there, bandages him up and takes him to hospital.

So, what she has actually done is completely validated his need for attention and drama, almost guaranteeing he'll do it again when he needs his attention.

I when I explained this to her, and said that she should have called the cops and Ambulances, she got pissed with me.

Now she doesn't talk to me any more.

Zero fucks given. She was on the cusp of being on my shit list anyway and that just made it easier.

So, I must say again. DO NOT WHITE KNIGHT FOR WOMEN OR DISTURBED PEOPLE!

Call the cops / Ambulance offices and stay the fuck out of it.

If her friend genuinely wanted to commit suicide, he wouldnt have called.

It was for attention

We both know this.

But well.. you know women and logic.. Not the best of friends

[–]xaxr 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Women: creatures no one understand, even themselves. Why is it that you never see rational women?

[–]Clauderoughly 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

You get some rational women but they are VERY VERY rare.

I know two, one of which I am married to.

She is rational 99% of the time, but sometimes she defaults back to irrational woman status.

The awesome thing is, she has the self awareness to realize what she is doing and snaps out of it pretty quick.

What nationality? Where was she raised? Was she raised tough? Does she have a good relationship with her parents?

[–]Clauderoughly 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Australian, Farmers daughter, so rural Vic, She is a tough girl, Yes she has an excellent relationship with her folks.

[–]no_game_player 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm not Clauderoughly, but I know a very rational woman (my sister). American (USA), raised here. Wasn't raised "tough". Good relationship with her mom, no relationship (because of falling out) with her father. In this case, I believe it was the strong math/science exposure. That might sound strange, and who knows if it's just both effects from the same unknown cause, but she's very good at both and I can see that having an influence.

Training the logical brain definitely strengthens logical processing of the world.

For the record, I disagree that women are "irrational creatures". Fundamentally, people are irrational, because most people are exposed or subjected to various forms of abuse during childhood. Exercise of the rational brain has a somewhat protective effect against the irrationality bred by abuse.

[–]no_game_player 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hm, I generally agree except for your latter postulated mechanism. I suppose the term could be redefined to fit it, and I guess I've never really thought about it before like that, but I just didn't think of abuse -> irrationality. I've always thought of humans == irrational.

I think you're right that strengthening logic in one area would tend to make one more logical in general. Although there are plenty of scientists whose lives would appear to be counter-examples to some extent...

[–]throwaway-o 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course.

If her friend genuinely wanted to commit suicide, he would have taken a .22 calibre asprin

One pull of the trigger and there's no taking it back.

[–]Clauderoughly -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

This was in Australia, so guns are very hard to get.

and a .22 ? Fuck that.

.22 is not a sure death, you have a good chance that it'll not kill you straight away.

Suicide is the cowards way out though.

Suicide is the cowards way out though.

As someone who made one failed attempt, then promised himself to never try again out of fear of the consequences, I've never been able to agree with this.

I get the point you're trying to make: face your problems, don't run from them, etc.

But, in my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to kill yourself, even if it's misguided. There are plenty of us who are living because it's the default option rather than some excess of courage.

How did it fail?

[–]no_game_player 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Mild risk of identifying detail, but meh, obscure details in an obscure place:

I had used an overdose with plausible deniability (caffeine). I was living with family and had timed it for when they were out. But I didn't give myself enough time. So I had taken it and I had thrown up in reaction, but it probably would've still worked except that they came back an hour or so later and found me and were concerned enough to take me to the emergency room.

I spent a few days in the hospital but managed to avoid psychiatric attention by claiming accident. Actually, they didn't even know what had happened until for some reason I confessed it. I think at that point I felt they weren't going to let me out of the hospital until they'd figured out what caused it, so I felt I had to partially admit it. They actually did do a limited psychological eval but I just denied and nothing came of it.

As I said, far too afraid of possible consequences if I failed again to attempt again. And there are very few methods which were acceptable to me anyhow. I had access to handguns and ammunition but I was too much of a coward to pull the trigger.

I think it depends on the reason on is doing it. It can be both. If you are doing it because your fear of death is less than your fear of reality, then you are a pussy. If you are doing because you have some massively crippling injury, it's understandable.

[–]TRP_ 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

.22 is called the assassins gun if choice, because when it's shot into the skull it doesn't have enough force to leave and instead bounces around making the brain into scrambled eggs. It does fail sometimes, I've read about people who have taken 1/3 if their head with a gun and managed tk live.

I agree Suicide is the coward's way out but if you're gonna take the coward's way out make sure you at least do it right.

And it might not be a sure death just like a condom/pills are a sure way to avoid pregnancy when fucking but the odds are sure in your favor.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i think it takes massive balls to put a gun to your head and pull the trigger.

[–]Clauderoughly 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

no it takes massive balls to face the thing that made you want to do that.

Blowing your brains out is an inherently selfish act, with no thought to anyone but yourself.

I am someone who has had to go out looking for people who have done that to themselves.

I know what the inside of a human head looks like after someone takes a shotgun to their chin.

I am also someone who knows what someone looks like after killing themselves, and it was not found for a few days.

They were in a car, in summer heat.

The bullet punched a hole in the roof of the 4wd.

Flies got in.

Figure the rest of that scene out for yourself.

Fuck Suicide

I suspect you know almost nothing about firearms.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're absolutely right. It's sad that people can't see it this way. Suicide isn't something to take lightly, and you can't validate the suicidee's expectations.

[–]throwaway-o 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can understand bad luck... But the preference of a person for abusive partners often signals that the person has issues (undealt-with past trauma) that lead them to choose abusive partners. These issues need to be addressed by professionals. When those issues remain unaddressed, the cycle of choosing abusive partners continues until death (often untimely).

And yet people insist up and down women are mind readers that can someone detect bitterness in a 3 sentence okcupid email.
