Honestly, if the girl married him despite a shitty engagement ring the first time, she probably deserves it more than average.

If I ever have a relationship that looks like it's heading towards marriage, I'm going to tell my gf about the "wedding watch" tradition whereby a man's purchase of a diamond ring for his woman is followed by the woman purchasing a watch of equal value.

But sometimes I think "Why don't I just not get married, and buy myself a Patek?"

This is not a blue pill example unless we know more about the relationship. If he's trying to secure her affections and sex, then yes, it is. If she's a quality wife who pleases him as he demands, then no. Diamonds are dumb, but women seek status through their men, like we seek status among each other, and diamonds just happen to be a symbol for that status. I have no problem rewarding women who behave.

She spent something like $300 on mine and this was when she didn't have a job, fresh out of school. She still has the ring my mom gave her.
