As someone who frequently interviews people for technical jobs, it is extremely easy to figure out who is exaggerating and who is flat out lying about their job experience. We have questions and scenarios for this. Sure, some people are good enough to slip through the cracks, but then we let them go during their probationary period when they prove that they aren't capable of jack shit. If you are going to lie, at least do some research on what you are lying about, that way it isn't completely obvious when you get asked a specific question. Really depends on the kind of work you are in to. It is hard to lie about being a technical person when you aren't. It may be easier to get away with in a sales type job/entry level job.

You cant lie about:

Where you worked

How long you worked there

Criminal record

Education

If you were fired from a prior job vs quit/laid off.

Almost everything else is up for grabs.
