So, earlier today I saw a post in r/TwoXChromosomes and, after reading through the comments, decided to make a post regarding views on gender identity and biology.

If you browse through the comments section, there are a majority of people rejoicing at the news of scientists "finding a biological source" for gender identity. There are also people (toward the bottom) pointing out that the article that was provided merely gave an assertion by the scientists whom did the research, yet did not provide any factual data aside from possible hypotheses as to why they believe this to be so.

My concern is why are people so quick to conclude whatever they want to be true? Especially over complicated matters such as science and the body? Can men really be women? Can women really be men?

My opinion: not exactly, no.

Biologically, there are two sexes, and they are denoted by their anatomical features. Everyone who's watched Kindergarten Cop should know this SOME people, however, believe (for some reason) that there is a "third sex" called Intersex. Intersex is a condition where a person has conflicting features in sexual and genetic expression which do not allow them to be distinctly categorized as male or female, but this does not change the fact that there are only two sex organs, and, therefore, only two sexes. The topic of gender, however, is a ^little ^bit more complicated.

During the "Male programming" process in the womb, the brain is washed with testosterone, resulting in a general lack of apathy for the rest of the world, except for sex, working out, being loud, and pissing on others to show dominance. Conversely, if this "programming" doesn't happen, this will result in a "non-male" prgrammed brain, which has an affinity for chocolate (or other delectable delights), pretty colors, and flashing lights and other various shiny things.

There are also conditions that prevent these programming events from occurring, one being Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS), which causes the brain to become immune to the androgenic effects of testosterone. This, again, results in a "non-male" programmed brain in males, which causes them to express their inborn love all things cute, sweet and glittery. As you can probably guess, there are similar combinations of events that contribute to "male programming" of female brains, as well.

This information is primarily what the "Transgender" community uses as reference for their perceived state of mind, but, when prompted with this information, one must ask themselves: "Is that all there is to it?"

Most people, like the ones over in TwoXChromosomes, seem to relish in this information and use it as fuel for a "One Big Happy Family" hug-fest, and welcome their newly-discovered, male-equipped sisters.

However, all this information says to me is that there is a biological basis for "gender identity," but it is little more than a phenomenon of errors occurring during a process in which there are supposed to be specific outcomes.

There are still only two sexes, and there are still only two genders.
