Inverse of this law (aggressive method:)

Offer people free shit. When they try to point out your flaws later, remind them you gave them free shit without them needing to ask. It's important you pre-empt with the sentiment that "I did that for you out of the kindness of my heart without you needing to ask." Or they will spin it and say "I didn't even ask you to do that!" That way you nullify their point by making them look bad before they can attack you by making the same point only directing it against you.

By pre-empting with your "philanthropy" and then pointing it out when they attack you it will seem as if they are just trying to put you down whilst you're this great person who is powerful yet benevolent. In their effort to make you look bad, you will make them look bad by talking about how good you have been to them. When one person is being negative and another positive, people will naturally lean towards the positive party. Nobody likes a hater. Haters seem petty and untrustworthy.

This links in with "protect your reputation at all costs." You must dominate the conversation psychologically. When you understand people and manipulation you can see 10 moves ahead (like chess) and anticipate what they'll do (relevant law: law 17 - cultivate an air of unpredictability,) so you can pre-empt their move before they get a chance to execute, robbing them of an attack. This becomes instinctual and natural once you have Machiavellianism ingrained and learnt rather than it be this abstract concept you read on Reddit or in the 48 laws.

When others are trying to anticipate your future moves, unpredictability with no obvious pattern in your decisions and behaviour is the ultimate defence in shielding yourself from their perceptual analysis. Remember, be water. It allows you to conceal as well as ambush.

Interestingly, this rule applies perfectly to women and Nice Guys.™ Nice Guys™ buy them drinks, food, furniture and houses for free. The hidden obligation is the expectation of sex: women's greatest and only form of payment. Hence why Nice Guys™ don't get any action, because they try to deceive their way into it.

This is perfectly seen in the corporate world, even in medicine. Pharmaceutical or biomedical engineering companies will come to the hospital and provide free meals and "samples" of their products for use. Of course, they want business.

Undergrad students, take note of this from a literal perspective. That free pizza you get at the sociologists-hate-hegemony-and-patriarchies club meeting is a waste of your time, energy, calories, and sanity. Go spend that hour away from the BIO305 building, and on something worth your time, and food worth your while.

When you receive something for free from someone, you are inherently indebted to that person. That person then has power over you and you can be sure that person will capitalize on their investment in the future.

A successful man is one with power and influence over many. Have people do small favors for you in order to increase comfort with you. If you can afford it, when you go out with a friend offer to buy them lunch or a drink if you're at a bar--not often enough for them to take you for granted, but as a means to get them to "owe you one."

This is probably one of the best laws to follow if your aim is to be independent.

Salaried positions are a good example. I'm starting to think that it's not actually that hard to start your own business, but losing the security that a salary provides stops a lot of people.

This law is not universally true, though: open source software is a good counterexample. The most popular open source software products are often better than the most popular commercial software products for many reasons, including many sets of eyes on the code looking for problems and the ability to debug and make changes if needed.

OK now wait a minute.

Started a new job a few months back. Was out having breakfast, two guys I work with pass the restaurant, drop in and say high. I pick up the tab for the lot of us. One of them later on returns the favor.

The other guy...bit of an insecure weirdo, says he's fluent in Japanese and has a black belt in Karate. Never offers to pick up the tab. Yet he has a new car and the latest Iphone. I assumed he was either a cheapskate or his wife controls all his money. Was he "Despising the Free Lunch" or just being an asshole?

This applies to welfare. It's a trap.

If you're on welfare and get enough to get by, as soon as you get a minimum wage job, your welfare gets cut, but now you aren't earning enough to make all ends meet.

I still don't understand why free meals provided by companies are bad. For example, free food in Google, some people say its purpose is to trick employees to eat fast and return to work. But Google doesn't have strict work hours, people can come at 10 and leave at 5. And it pays a higher than average salary to people with 3-5 years of work experience.

Though this law applies to companies which create corporate events and pretend that their employees are a close family. These companies pay less and try to substitute money by corporate spirit bullshit.
