I think the term "slut" among women actually has four main purposes:

Makes a woman seem like she has slept with lots of men, lowering her value to men. I don't actually think that lowers her value to men that much, though. My attraction for a girl doesn't really change if I find out she's slept around.
Makes a woman seem like she sleeps with men without commitment from them, specifically to make her seem like a bigger reproductive threat to other women.
It serves as a collective insult of a woman which excludes her from the female peer group, thus reduces her ability to raise children (female peer group membership would have been important for this). If she can't raise children, she is less likely to sleep with men and thus this neutralises her as a reproductive threat.
Stops her from cheapening the value of sex in that tribe. If women want to use sex as leverage for resources, they need to stop other women giving it away for free. It's essentially price-fixing.

I think the term is primarily used as a way to control women's behaviour relative to the female group, rather than ruin her reputation in a man's eyes. Women tend to gossip to other women, rather than to men.

The thing is, that's all just speculation. I don't have any way to verify it. Did the researchers in this study have a way of verifying it?

The ovulation/ mate guarding section is very interesting though. I remember reading some research a while back which made a pretty solid case for that being the reason women sync their periods.

Edit: Added reason number four. That's possibly the biggest reason IMO.

I did this. My boyfriend was hanging around another girl and I was jealous. Then I started making comments to him about her questionable dating habits which was basically just thinnly veiled slut shaming. I guess I was trying to lower her value in his eyes so he wouldn't leave me for her or sleep with her.
