Because when women say they want nice guys , they imagine attractive nice guys. "Be yourself" means be genuine , not a fake , pretentious wannabe .

Also, one particular thing that isn't in the list: A woman will give you not only an approach that's tailor-made to herself, but will also somehow ignore the fact that you may be entirely wasting your time with her. For example if they greatly value a guy courting her for months or a relationship organically growing out of friendship ("getting to know her"), this somehow presupposes that it pays off for him. Yet when they tell that to a guy, it's basically just asking him to do what amounts to wasting several months of his life in 90%+ of cases.

They're differently situated. It's hard for most people to give advice to the opposite sex regarding mating that is useful because most people of both sexes tend to project to some degree the experience of their own sex in the mating game into the advice that they are giving, despite the fact that they are giving it to someone of the opposite sex.

Some common reasons for a man getting bad dating advice from women:

They don't realize the differences between how they go about getting a man and how a man would go about getting a woman. The result is that they offer advice that works for them but that ends up generally being too passive to work well for men.
They'll give advice not on what maximizes a man's attractiveness or ability to get women, but instead on what makes women less intimidated and more comfortable.
Their advice is more about making you feel good at the moment than about giving potentially hard truths that will help you get better over the long run.

I don't think it's impossible for a woman to give good dating advice to men, just like I don't think it's impossible for a man to give good dating advice to women. I do hate the "they are the gender I'm trying to get with so obviously they know the secrets" assumptions that the opposite sex must know what they're talking about, though.

I think a lot of this kind of homespun "wisdom" comes from a kind of Readers Digest, Dear Abby mentality which has pervaded popular culture and left an indelible mark on the way people approach certain things. It's the kind of advice one would hear on a vacuous TV show like The Brady Bunch, so people hear this stuff and regurgitate it like a mindless parrot.
