At this point in history, I think people are waking up to the reality that govt is just a service, and that if you don't like the local service, you can just move on to more favorable surroundings. For example, a lot of people are leaving progressive stronghold states like Cali and Illinois for smaller govt type states like Florida, NH, and Nevada. If things get too bad federally, I think you'll see migration to more liberty minded places in South America and so forth.

In the final analysis, no govt is going to be anywhere near perfect so, we should disabuse ourselves of the hope that it will be. That is a utopian pipe dream whose devotees have always ended up welcoming totalitarianism (China, USSR, etc). The Lord of the Flies is a great book about this subject. I remember the author stating that society is a reflection of the moral character of the individual so, if the people are bad, any system of govt, no matter how we'll devised, won't prosper in the long run.
