the concept of dowrys is a good indication where a society currently is. i quote another post on this:

Huh?

From morroco, north saharan africa, to the mid-east, to many parts of the indian sub-continent, to malaysia & indonesia the male traditionally gives dowry to the bride and her family. That's how islamic marriages work.

Forget dowry - if there is clearly one thing about Islamic marriages that one would easily contrast with American ones is that the Islamic marriage contract is basically an American marriage contract with a pre-nup baked into it. And already by default gives far less incentives to divorce than its counterpart.

In the West, marriages are essentially victory parties for women. The man has been conquered. It's "HER" day, and no one would ever say it's "HIS" day.

Her ambitions are now locked in at the direct expense of his. And his financial future is now quite literally at her mercy.

In exchange for this, the modern man receives essentially nothing.

There is no promise that she will be a home-maker. There is no promise that she will cook, clean or make his life easier.

But there is very explicitly, the promise that the male will provide for her.

Is it any wonder that millions of men are picking up their ball and leaving the field?

Now we've got women furious that men won't "step up". After stripping away every single positive benefit to the man, women are now attempting to use "shaming" to get men to "step up".

Good luck with that ladies. I've seen the future, and it's filled with single happy men, and fat lonely women wondering "where have all the good guys gone".

Yeah. And the engagement ring came from old tradition that accepted that engaged couples would have sex, and the woman would lose her virginity and therefore her value. So, if they didn't get married for some reason, then the woman could sell the ring to support her spinster existence.

These days, how many men u know who got engaged to a virgin? So, the woman doesn't have a virginity left to lose. And yet we still give engagement rings to compensate them for this loss. And for some idiots out there, a bigger and bigger ring every year, BTW.

My ex wife still has her modest engagement ring. I wonder if it makes her feel better about being newly single and childless in the second half of her 30s.
