Hey. I lost lots of friends when i moved cities because it turns out lots of people dont give a shit about you when they cant use you for things, even things as simple as padding numbers at parties, etc.

This isn't intended to contradict, and/or excuse, but it's worth pointing out that this is the culture that we all went through as young folks, some obviously embrace it to more extremes than others but until something changes this is going to continue to be par for the course, and women do suffer the more because of it for all the reasons discussed here.

In all fairness, those aren't friends, they're "allies". They're there only for the good times. Real friends stick around once the literal and metaphorical hangover hits.

Makes me remember the one case of the coed who a few years ago wandered off from a party into negative cold weather and was found frozen to death later. Not to say that she wasn't responsible for her own demise, but a good set of friends would have prevented her from leaving drunk. A good set of friends will let you crash on their couch if you're too drunk to leave. The same friends that tried to hook you up with the fat grenade at the party will also share a meal of eggs, bacon, coffee and a Bloody Mary for the hangover.

And I'm mostly basing it on my own anecdotes where we always crashed at each other's places, particularly if we were in Mexico and were too wasted to cross back to the States. Most if us had a house that our parents owned or rented and that's were we went. And again, this is where you know you're getting quality friends. Friends that will last you a lifetime.

Both "friends" and girlfriends / spouses only are around when you're doing fine, the second shit hits the fan you're on your own.
