Blockbuster movies generally play out common tropes and cliches. They aren't worth analyzing, but are generally understood to pander to the average audience.

The takeaway of movies is that they are often representative of what has been normalized in society. If we take a look at this movie, some common elements include:

  1. Divorce as a norm.

  2. "Empowered" female lead.

I think you are looking too deep into it. It was fairly traditional to cater to the older audience that may have grown up with the originals.

I personally thought the entire movie was utter shit. The story, the scope, the script, CGI, acting, Pratt's "southern twang" accent. I thought it was all garbage and paid poor homage to the original Jurassic Park.

I nearly walked out the theater 2/3rds the way. The movie fucking sucked.

that triumph scrambler looked bad ass though, love that matt green paint

I'm with you on finding it difficult to enjoy movies now. I couldn't stand Mad Max while most of my friends loved it, I was obsessing over the gender dynamics.

As far as Jurassic World, the older brother saying "you're stronger than me" is actually classic alpha behavior. The alpha holds power and dispenses it as he sees fit. His younger brother needs support in a stressful situation, so the older brother gives power in the form of encouragement.

The elder teen boy has a girlfriend that he says he loves

No, he didn't. She said she loved him and he didn't say it back.

During a train ride one of the brothers suggests that their parents are getting a divorce. The reply he got was pretty much to suck it up.

The little boy was being a bitch. Sucking it up was exactly what he needed to do and what I wished kids would do instead of bitching about it to their friends. I hope every child of divorced parents saw that and decided they needed to suck it up too.

The park controller was female (of course).

Women are in all sorts of positions of power. I fail to see how a realistic portrayal of the workplace is bad.

She was wholly ill-equiped to manage the project that she was given. At one stage she enters the room and tells everyone to "Remain Calm". This is not pragmatic advice in the slightest.

She sucked at her job. Just so happens a lot of women suck at their jobs. Why is it bad to show this in a movie?

She wears her high heels throughout the movie and is even chased by a T-rex in them. But, you know, "you go girl". She doesn't even know the age of her nephews, a point the lead man pulls her up on. She's a real shitty piece of work but in the end she gets her man anyway. Complete lack of agency, "You can have it all girl".

You're getting closer to the point. The biggest problem with her is that she isn't looking for a man or isn't taken by a man. Her familial nature is totally skewed into a desire for advancement in her career. There is a lot more we could write on discussing that. Every pretty woman has a man or is hoping to be swept off her feet by a man. Her character is totally unrealistic in respect to the points you mention and the ones I have written here. The complete lack of agency isn't bad though. Women are like children and most possess little or no agency at all. Notable or individual exceptions to not change this rule.

The scientists in the lab: a healthy 50/50 mix of men and women. The ranger quad who are tasked go out to kill the dinosaur: all men. They all die pretty quickly. No one cares. Men are disposable.

Such is reality and I fail to see why it is bad to portray reality in a movie. Sucks, huh? Society thinks you and I are disposable. Get used to it.

Beta decides to "stay behind to save everyone". No one cares. AF/BB.

Again this is reality here. No beta, even the ones who slave away for his family, gets the appreciation and respect due his sacrifice. Let it serve as an example to not be a little beta bitch. Why is it bad to accurately portray facets of reality in a movie. Does reality anger you?

Thanks for writing, I'm glad someone brought this up. I hope to see more posts like this in the future.

I think one of the people who were sent to kill the dinosaurs and got killed was a woman...

[–]Dr_Killpatient0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He's right. Don't downvote him. Go see the movie, if you don't believe.

All the previous JP movies featured all-male deaths. This one has 2 female deaths - the British assistant and the female trapper, plus whoever got eaten by the pterodactyls.

Besides, whining about movies is what SJW's do. This isn't very RP.

Yeah, the woman in white who was tossed around and wound up getting eaten by that giant water dinosaur at the same time as the pterodactyl.
