And -- when the dependent women are hurt, they end up crippling their own children, especially their sons.

In my view, single mothers should not be permitted to raise children alone. Single fathers - divorced dads and widowers - do across the board better jobs as solo parents than single mothers do.

We have the single mom epidemic we have now for two main reasons:

1) because of the antiquated "Tender Years" doctrine from old English and American family law (dictating that when a child is young and breastfeeding you can't take the kid from his mother, at least not until he's weaned); and

2) In the 1970s and 80s there was a proliferation of "scientific research" concluding that mothers are more nurturing and caring parents; that they're more attentive and kind parents; that fathers are too rigid, harsh and demanding; and that mothers are just better all around human beings and parents than fathers could ever be. And so, in divorces, it has simply become de rigueur - "primary custody of kids is to mother; father ordered to pay child support; father allowed visitation every other weekend and once a week during the week, from X am to X am the next day; mother awarded possession of the marital residence so as to assure continuity of children's living situation; father to quitclaim his interest in the house to mother."

When ex H doesn't pay up; the courts fall on him like a ton of bricks. When ex W poisons the kids against ex H or refuses visitation, the courts look the other way and say "eh, what can you do?"

Wife gets the goldmine (the gold her ex husband mined and produced and created); husband gets the shaft.

Don't forget my favorite: 'Maintaining the woman in the lifestyle to which she has become accustomed.'

Obviously to be fair this means the woman has to keep banging the man and blowing him in order to maintain the man in the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed. The law is fair and balanced. Right?

What? You mean the wife doesn't have blow the man a single time and she still gets everything! You mean she doesn't even have to fulfill her vows and she still gets everything? You mean she can be a sex denying harpy the day after the wedding and she still gets everything.

You mean the man has all the duties and responsibilities during and after the wedding and the woman has NO responsibilities before, during or after the wedding?

Hmm, I am not sure this 'marriage' thing is a good deal for men.

The model of slavery in America, chattel slavery, was particularly gruesome and state sponsored. The North American slave trade has been an anomaly amongst historical and modern slavery. It is the only instance of slavery that was linked to racial inferiority and dehumanization of an entire group. Slavery was justified because the slaves were naturally animals.

In historical slavery, slaves were given certain rights. In almost all ancient societies, male slaves had ways to earn their freedom or they had legal standing as persons. Roman slavery for example allowed slaves to testify in court. Mutilation was not allowed. In the Muslim historical tradition, slaves were allowed to buy their freedom and were considered spiritually equal to their masters.

Modern Arab slavery is mostly domestic workers and of course sex slaves. Sex slavery hasn’t really changed all that much except that sale of sex slaves doesn’t happen in many places.

The reason people are still fixated on North American slavery is for the same reason we are still fixated on the holocaust.

It was just abnormally gruesome.

But here’s the million dollar question:

so what? What should we do about it?

And at this point I think the only thing is to just remember that it happened. And like the holocaust, it shouldn’t be used to demonize a group of people that had nothing to do with it. Modern white people didn’t choose to enslave anyone just like modern blacks aren’t slaves.

But it’s really fascinating from a historical standpoint. Beware of those who try to minimize it though. If they can’t handle the gruesome truth, they are weak.

You should say “yeah, that was amazingly fucked up! Boy am I glad I had nothing to do with it!” And leave it as just a point in history mostly divorced from the modern world. (Mostly... it’s legacy as a racial and inferiority based system does have ripple effects that have really shaped modern social structures but it’s nothing to chant and march about. That shit was 150 years ago!)

It’s interesting, you shouldn’t minimize it, but you shouldn’t let anyone hold you responsible for it. No one chose to be born.
