The older we become, the older we realize 'we often chose not what is best but what is the least worst' and that, as Rochefoucauld says, "We promise according to our hopes and fulfill according to our fears"
Men, in this regard, have become more fortunate in their experience with mate selection. For although we may have our limits when we are young, the older we get, the more lenient things seem to go for us. While on the other hand, it is quite different for women. As they age, they become more modest and kind and so what they seek is no longer a man of top status but rather anything that is not rock bottom.
A mirror can be found more in a woman's lodgings than in a man and they use it much more. But it is precisely this use of the mirror that can lead to devastating tolls on the mind. Where they once saw the beautiful girl, the darling of parties and events, now they see nothing more than the wrinkling face of a grey-haired woman. The twilight of beauty. They suddenly see more doors shut than open and gaze at a world where new youth has bloomed and are the new loved ones.
This is why women are so clumsy in their pursuit of relationships and why, overall, men often end up more satisfied in a relationship than women. Age puts them in a poverty worse than ours and although their sexdrive does increase when they are approaching menopause, it still doesn't guarantee that quality men will come their way. Nay, a woman's obsession with a 'quality man' or 'good man' is primarily why they are so clumsy with relationships. They see the forest for the trees and it is this shortsightedness that really prevents them any satisfaction. They are drawn into a relationship by the superficial prospects and illusions only to one day realize that they have vanished. It is high expectations more than anything which leads a woman into a relationship. Consequently, this is also what drives the majority of casino gamblers. They go in with their capital, they win some, they lose some, but in the end, you always run out of money and the house always wins.
