You act as though there was some sort of "relationship" involved to find out about. Backup could be a guy she fucked once behind the rocks for his portion of berries or whatever while alpha was out hunting. Probably took less than a minute back then from some horny dude with no porn. Maybe she just smiled at him in passing so he protects her first in a power struggle. We see it in primates today which is probably the closest we will come to ever having any sort of proof. Also alphas rarely kill the offending male even when they find out about cheating in simian groups. A beat-down sure but rarely fatal. I think you are overblowing the risk of the cheating back then. Also worth noting the female herself is never punished directly in the interactions.

Again its all speculation.

Just another thought I had. The sex act itself may have even been less a trespass than is currently considered today. More to them like stealing an extra helping at dinner or something. They certainly would not have known about dna or inheritence or anything. Hell its possible the alpha didn't even care once he got off. He may have traded them out for loyalty and reward.

Disagree. I think 100k years ago people lived as hunter-gatherers. I read a study that summarized hunter-gather societies. 91% had monogamous marriage. They may have had divorce, but even they saw advantages in marriage.

Since modern hunter-gatherers (prior to destruction of their culture) practised marriage, I would say that 100k years ago they likely did as well.

If they had harems, what would the men without women do? Would they work their butts off for that guy's women? No fucking way. They would do the equivalent of 'hunter-gatherer MGTOW' and no one could do a thing about it, because in hunter-gatherer societies, it just doesn't work to force people to do that. This means an alpha couldn't have a harem, because there isn't enough beta men to do all the work to support all his women. Such a harem-supporting system would only be possible with settled/farming societies and rule of law.

We don't have harems today, but a vaguely analogous system that actually benefits women, the government:
