For those not familiar with early modern European art, it was common at the time for painters to paint an assemblage of objects that represent various human interests or especially luxuries and vanities. Such a painting, without living human or animal figures, is called a "still life"—nature morte in French, which literally translated as "dead nature." A still life that featured luxuries or vanities was called a "vanitas" picture (Latin for vanity), as it was intended to remind us that all the things of this world are merely vanities. They are also called "memento mori," meaning a reminder of death, which is pretty much the same thing as a vanitas picture, supposed to remind us that life is fleeting and death is ever-present. This picture is a variation on the vanitas theme, specifically on the theme of hunting. One can speculate that a patron particularly enamored of hunting commissioned a hunting-themed vanitas. Even though everyone was supposed to be perpetually preparing their soul for the next world, and reminding themselves that life is fleeting, they did so by celebrating the things of this world that they loved the most.
