I have a question about a rocky relationship I’m in that may cost me enormously if I don’t play it right, yet I want to give it a chance. We have been dating for 2.5 years, and cohabiting for 6 months now and also bought a house together in Vancouver. No kids, she works, but I earn much more. I have far more assets.

I have read numerous posts on various MGTOW forums that in Canada, even as little as 6 months together is enough to trigger spousal support and asset division. Concerned about this, I consulted for 45 minutes (paid) with a very high-priced divorce lawyer in BC with >30 years’ experience (he runs his firm). I gave him my details, and he stated there was no way this could happen to me unless either a) there were kids (which there are not), or b) cohabitation for 2 years. He suggested that if it doesn’t work out, I move out of the house a couple months before 2 years to be safe, but he stated no possibility of any surprises before that, certainly not at 6 months.

Would anyone who’s ever posted about spousal support and asset division happening with cohabitation LESS than 2 years in any province in Canada where the law states 2 years (especially BC please), in the absence of marriage or any children, please post some links and/or anecdotes to back this up? I have found none! In the absence of any evidence of this risk, I may cohabitate w/o kids for as long as 1 year 9 months to really try to make it work out between us, but if it fails, I’ll bail 3 months shy of 2 years so as not to get divorce raped. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks for all the advice and input guys. I responded below to each of you too but having a new throwaway account for this post means my comments are not showing, so I'll add my thanks here.
