I've seen it time and time again when brains , sex, and emotions are at odds with each other. I've known brilliant men who have blown up their lives for women thinking that they were doing the right thing .

I hate to be a debbie downer but I've heard stories like this before ... what happens next is James wife begins complaining that he doesn't make enough money, she probably fucks around behind his back with someone who did graduate law school, and then she tells him how much he's changed and how he used to " DREAM BIG and want things for us" but since he lost his passion ( that's how she'll see it ) she needs to meet someone with more ambition .

As a spouse, if you want your partner to give up their dreams then you're not the person they should have married anyway.

If you can't support them doing what they want to achieve for themselves, then you're dragging them down for your own selfish needs.

What a terrible spouse. Tell your friend that her demanding of him that she MUST be his priority at all times is cause for divorce. She will always hold him back and drag him down. That is not fair to him and not what marriage should be about.

I have a similar story of a friend whose girlfriend insisted he needed to pick a different career path (he is pursuing acting and film) to match her earnings (she is in law school). It's sad because she comes from money, is set for life, and is already going to have a very lucrative career yet she won't let the man she supposedly loves chase his dreams. It's not enough that he can make money doing other jobs, he needs to MATCH her at the very least.

My buddy Charlie.

All he ever wanted to be was a cop. He started out as a police explorer when he was 16. At 21 he applied and washed out during testing for his dream department that he was with since he was 16. He didn't give up. He was hired on by them in a non-sworn administrative position where he went around writing tickets all the while hoping that he could get picked up under an internal hiring announcement. He sucked up that depressing soul sucking job (his words) all the while showing up to work every day with a positive attitude and a can do spirit, hoping to impress this department enough to give him a chance. At the same time, improving himself, took classes to improve his writing skills and his reading comprehension, (what got him was the written test the first time around) worked out and stayed in shape since the prestigious department he wanted to be a cop for is know at having the toughest academy in the country.

Well 5 years later his dream finally happened, he was hired under an internal to the department only vacancy and finally he was in the academy! His dream was becoming a reality!

About halfway through his 6 month academy, his fiancee tells him she doesn't want to be married to a cop. Wants him to quit and finish college. This story doesn't have a happy ending and I know everyone here can guess exactly what happen next: he quits for her and soon after, she breaks off their engagement and dumps him.

Now all of us buddy's to Charlie, we didn't drop hints or tried to be subtle, we point blank told him right to his face "DON'T FUCKING QUIT!" We begged him, we screamed at him, we engaged with him logically, we made him remember that this was his life long dream; it all fell on deaf ears.

Besides losing his dream job and his finance, all of us as friends started drifting away from him. I would like to say not intentionally, but him crying to us about how we were right somehow made it worse. I know personally, I looked at him as a pathetic excuse of a man and although I and others were cool to him, we started to drift apart from him. Last time we all hung out with him, he was blathering about how right we were, he was applying around to different cities and most of all, what happened to him will never happen again. We all nodded our heads and said sure Charlie we know you will make it.

I don't know if he ever got hired on anywhere, but I seriously doubt he did. His window to get in was gone and the last time I saw him, he was pushing 30 and already he was gaining middle age weight and didn't look to be in good physical shape.

I liked Charlie, he was a nice guy and a good friend, but I say this from the bottom of my heart: FUCK YOU CHARLIE! You created your own hell. You did this to yourself.

His girlfriend went to Korea to do a masters degree. He quit his job to do online contract programming from Korea.

This is one time I think, as his friend, you can openly say to him, what the fuck? Prolly best avoid discussing the girl herself, but you can discuss his law degree. He must complete it, even if it displeases master. Tell him your honest option, again without being too negative about his girl. No point, he won't listen. I'm not dissing your chum, I'm not too smart with women either. But he still needs to hear it.

Luckily, I'm in my 40's now, and wouldn't so much as miss gaming-time for a chick, but it's harder for younger men, what with their auto-boner issue.
