This event happened in the 1950's during a time (and place) where racial segregation laws were enforced (and not removed for another 10 years). It was awful how the woman falsely accused the boy (and admitted later that she was not honest), but the driving force behind this case was racism. He was in a grocery store where he spoke to a white married woman. That was basically all the judges needed to hear to decide he was guilty.
