Hello Wandering Jue,

I am also a MD from a gulf country and what I have as an advice is the following:

Your options are either open a lounge/cafe/start a business that would net you an extra income in addition to your GP income, allows you to meet new people and expand accordingly (also contact with non-committing women who’d see you as a side affair which is extremely nice).

Or, Continue medical residency because an expert will always be needed, consider it as a safety measure, sadly a medical residency is super hard-work and unhappiness for at least four years so it’s your call.

Lastly, those sub-medical studies are actually looked down at and they won’t be easily classified in governing medical bodies in most countries (epidemiology for example, it’s master studies so your income won’t change drastically and your work environment will be static for the years to come).

Don’t fall for the wake up at 5 a.m everyday and have a 10 years life plan ahead, while jogging and listening to Eye of The Tiger, that’s all bullshit and won’t get you anywhere, just know what you want to do in the next three months and live as such.

What I have done was actually the following: finished Med school and worked as a medical officer in psychiatry, gathered a good chunk of money and took a two years off, I travelled to Europe, learned languages and enjoyed life/women/my time.

Now that’s the fun is over, I am currently starting my own business while going to my very relaxed medical officer job (who were very happy to have me back despite me slacking off sometimes) to support my business plans and the like, I think we both are in the category of not wanting to be unhappy and career crazed. I hate monotony and it’s been driving me to feel good, look good and just enjoy life.

My final advice to you is: travel, travel, travel. I’ve garnered so many ideas and experienced life to the fullest at such a very young age because I travelled a lot, the business ideas I got were also from my travels and to bring my particular business module in a gulf country will 90% succeed. So... fly, have fun, enjoy life and don’t be a mgtow that keeps away from women, enjoy them to the fullest they’re a life commodity in some sense and a man shouldn’t deny himself that pleasure.

Aim for your dream no matter how unlikely or impossible it seems. Men are shoved down by society today with ridiculous claims like we have huge egos and no real knowledge or skills. When you work hard enough as you have to get real knowledge/skills, a little ego is actually absolutely warranted and necessary; of course, too much of anything is bad. In doing this, they dumb down men's dreams when we would normally be thinking of either heading a project or at least being an integral part of a project we believe strongly in. Mens' work is supposed to be satisfactory to HIMSELF not what gynocentric society tries to push on him for a laughable "standard".

Your post mentions some very high medical studies. I only was an EMT, so you've already done far beyond my level of knowledge in that particular industry so take my advice with that in mind.

What you want to do first is lay out all options you have. Not just position or company, but also many options within a single field so you can have some variety in HOW they do business when you make your choice. Plan far ahead; like 20 years+ ahead. My goal right now won't be accomplished for the next 20-30 years and it looks impossible from where I am right now, but that will all change as each step is gradually accomplished over time. I would advise you take this same approach.

First, you need to decide what actually makes you happy and explore just how many options are out there for satisfaction. Next, narrow this down to only the options that seem the best fit for what you're trying to accomplish. When you pick one, make sure its something you can feel true passion for or else your life will feel like the walking undead when it comes to work/professional life.

Once you've completed these steps, all you need is responsibility, discipline, and good consistent work ethic and you'll accomplish what you set out to do.

Get a nice notebook and write down one professional problem, issue, case, disease, long term goal, research idea per day.

The only thing specific you said was a preference for not seeing patients. I am basing my answer on that. In addition to epidemiology, consider:

Public Health (a little bit of seeing patients), radiology (may do procedures but care is episodic, or specialize in reading images for no direct patient care), pathology.

Anesthesiology involves seeing patients, but it procedure oriented and does not involve follow up care. You basically stop talking to the patient when you start giving drugs.
