The reason why men abandoned dating and marriage is because of this delusion that women are equal to men, which essentially renders a man useless to a woman and makes men confused for what their role is in a relationship. Furthermore, men have less rights by the day while women receive more rights. It's become so hostile towards men that it's illogical to stick around in the dating scene. The only reason why a man would still bother is either 1. he is unaware of all this or 2. he is aware but he still needs that "emotional connection" as you put it.
There are healthier ways to cope and find relationships than to cut yourself off from an emotional need.
