I've been noticing this a lot as I watch movies set in the past. The latest being the Tolkien biography movie. He is an orphaned young man who falls in love with this other orphaned young women over a number of years. This woman's entire social circle is basically Tolkien and this old hag who took her in and forces her to play piano. That's it. She has no other potential suitors in her life. They start to click romantically when she's 18ish and he's stupid enough to bring her to meet a bunch of his cultured and rich friends from Oxford / Cambridge. He almost immediately regrets it as she hits it off VERY well w/ one of them, talking about classical composers and opera and topics she is super passionate about but that Tolkien has no knowledge of. He realizes the danger and immediately pulls her out of the meetup and drags her home, with her wondering what went wrong. This is eventually patched over with some flowers and an attempt to take her to the opera. It's all very beautiful, and I wont spoil any more.

Now imagine this story happened in modern times. How improbable and damn near impossible it is. Her dating pool wouldn't be limited to 1 or 2 men she knows personally, it would be the entirety of London using Tinder/OKC. She never would have 'settled' for Tolkien, but even if she had she would have facebooked that oxford guy who likes opera that she met for only 10 minutes and Tolkien would be yesterday's news.
