Facebook, Twitter, Gab, Minds, Instagram and all the other social media platforms are a bad idea for a more fundamental reason - the healthy limitations of the human condition with regards to social relations.

Traditional phpbb/vbulletin forum systems, BBSes, IRC, Reddit, 4chan and the like are naturally better options as they don't utilize emotive design patterns to encourage platform loyalty (such as "adding friends" or "following people") - and thus don't fall into the same traps.

I keep on it purely to coordinate events with friends, no posting activity. I'm a bit older, so while it used to be used for the reasons you listed above, things have changed among my friend group.

Of all the women in my cohort, for most of whom the wall has long passed, you get 3 groups:

1) They don't have any photos of themselves as they are old/fat/ugly and invisible, and they know it. Their profile photos are of a flower, their children/grandchildren, or their cats/wine bottles. For the younger ones (~40), every so often on their feed, a "facebook memory" will come up from 10 years ago of them much closer to their heyday, accompanied with some wistful caption.

2) These ones have fared better but the wall takes no prisoners. Lots of profile pics, but the makeup and the filters are laid on thick. Careful angles to hide double chins and bingo wings, all the usual OLD tricks. These are a mix of those who had kids early and want a shot at the CC, and those who are gripping feverishly to stay on it. Often they are pics with the new simp boyfriend they are parading like a trophy ("Hah world, look I can still bag a man!!!"). Sometimes they show their crazy-ass Brady-bunch blended families.

3) Those virtue signalers/showoffs who model the perfect family life, with their perfect hair/makeup, perfect houses, perfect kids, and perfect ploughhorse husbands (in order of importance). What you don't see is her prescription for anti-depressants, appointments with the psychologist for her kids with anxiety/autism/ADHD/numerous other disorders and her husband's burner phone that he uses to hook up with anything with a pussy on the side, as he is completely not attracted to his wife due to all the fucking nagging and starting to wake up to the red pill.

Ditched it in grad school and haven't looked back. Too much of a time sink.

Plus, you are essentially an unpaid laborer for Mark Zuckerberg. The more time and crap you do on his platform, the bigger his advertising metrics are, and the bigger adbux he can demand from advertisers.

While I applaud your decision to leave FaceBook...

I feel compelled to note that your reasons for doing so -- while perfectly valid -- are largely due to the social group you are a part of.

My point in that?

Quitting Facebook may be a good and necessary part of getting this toxic BS from your life; but I would say it is NOT likely to be sufficient... it would seem that you need a wholly different group of friends.

I use facebook but keep it mostly hobby related. I add people who are friends and honestly I've made a couple of friends on it from other countries who I've traded hobby related stuff with. It's not all bad, it just depends on how you use it and how much information you give it. I keep much of my personal life off it and never add work colleagues.

Facebook is the biggest marketplace and the product is you. With its over 2billion users worldwide, it provides a platform for businesses where everybody can be reached, targeted and especially retargeted specifically and with a terrifyingly good precision for a product/service. It's algorithm knows you better than you'd ever know yourself.

Facebook is terrible. Terrible for your mental health and even worse because it's full of chick's opinions you really dgaf about. I deactivated mine about four months ago. Don't miss it all. Also, zuck is a cuck.
