Everybody shit tests.

Paramedics/firefighters/cops are all known to unmercifully "prank" each other. Shit like filling your boots with lube, leaving the vehicle with all the lights/sirens on so that when your partner starts it he gives the whole station a lightshow, trash talking, mom jokes, etc.

Why? Because if you lose your cool at one of these little annoying pranks it speaks volumes about how you'll react when the shit really hits the fan.

Would you rather go through a door with a guy who laughed off your prank and got you back even better a few days later, or have to wonder if the poor sad sack who got all butthurt that you taped him to the wall will well and truly lose his shit when it gets serious?

Everybody shit tests.

Everyone is testing you at all times, whether either of you know it or not.

Friends give you the "is this someone I want to be associated with?" test.

Your boss gives you the "did I fuck up when I hired him?" test.

Your girl gives you the "am I fucking a loser?" test.

And the best part about seeing life through the "shit-test lens" is that even if you lucked out and nobody is actively testing you, viewing the world like this will force you to be better.

Does it matter if it's conscious or not?

What if sometimes it's a purposeful test, and sometimes just a female brain fart from insecurity, PMS, neurosis, etc?

It doesn't matter.

What matters is that the phenomenon is real and men need to deal with it if they want to deal with the woman.

We call it 'shit-test' because that's how we label the phenomenon so that everyone understands what we're talking about.

It's not always done consciously. My experience says that some girls do that just to check if you will cave in just for fun, and others do it on subconscious level.

"I have a boyfriend." is, most times, a shit test. You have a boyfriend? Really? And you're out on a Saturday night dressed to kill and at a bar with your girlfriend? Sure. And I'm married. She's at home watching the younguns.

My understanding was always that women are subconsciously testing men because of their biology, determining through the man's response whether or not he is an alpha or beta, and searching for a suitable mate.

How does one go about determining quality? You have to test it. If you run a manufacturing or software engineering process and there's no QA testing, there will be defects. You think she wants to grow a defective baby inside her for 9 months and support it another 18 years? Of course they test.

I believe it is mostly subconscious.

Although it seems incredibly dumb (and in the context of modern civilization with the monogamous marriage model and male /female sorta-equality in the workforce, it is), you have to remember that our brains have evolved these mechanisms over millennia in a context of wilderness and fight for survival. It was literally a matter of life and death for the female and her actual or potential offspring to determine if she was risking being saddled with a beta, especially if an alpha was potentially available.
