Well for me I was 8 when dad gave me my first .22cal rifle. A Remington bolt action single shot which required manual loading. He wouldn't let me have a BB gun because he wanted me to understand that a firearm is dangerous and never to be played with like a toy.
Dad is a USMC marksman rated expert on all small arms save for the .45. He manned a BAR in the battle of the Chosin reservoir in North Korea when the Chinese encircled US forces..
He later served at Paris Island as a training Officer at Captain Rank. By the time I was born he was a Lt.Col and serving on rotation to the Pentagon but also farmed 1200 acres of cotton, soybeans and milo maize in Louisiana.
So growing up on the farm dad taught me at a much earlier age about gun safety, farming and life. With my dad's training I became a crack shot with my first rifle. I learned how to load a round without taking my eyes off the target and to always make the first shot count. I hunted rabbits, snakes, nutria rats, squirrels and crows and learned how to navigate the backwoods and bayou of Louisiana.
My firearms training got me a spot on my college rifle team and my backwoods skills got me a spot on the orienteering team. The ROTC instructor for the teams considered me one of his best student his 20 years of teaching.
It's important to teach kids firearm safety and I'm lucky to have a father who taught me well. There are 4H programs to teach kids firearm safety as well as some law enforcement programs designed to train kids as well in a lot of areas.

At least the kid was taught proper gun safety. Seriously trained kids taught about gun safety do not have these "accidents" in which they think the gun is a toy. Good father's teach their kids to respect a weapon and keep them locked in a safe. So the boy that was taught and had this drilled into his head is correct in his word bubble. That last sentence though lol
