How does one combat bad word of mouth and social media gossip?

I was falsely accused awhile back but a friend told me that lots of people in my town have been spreading rumors about me and have been telling all their friends and family by word of mouth or facebook messenger. I'd like to see if I can put a case and sue for slander. How can I stop this? How can I combat bad word of mouth and bad social media?
