Would think you could find many open positions as a consultant for business development.

Selling is a skill few developers have and it's what has allowed me to jump the line.

Instead of competing on who graduated with a CS degree from the "right" university, spent 2 years at "name brand" tech company, etc.

Self taught Software Developer here.

I live in the UK, so I can only really vouch for the UK. However, I would suggest you don't limit yourself to the USA. My understanding of the USA IT market is they pretty much demand a CS Degree. However, in Europe experience really is king.

I got my experience by contacting some small IT companies and asking them if they would be interested in letting me work on their projects for free, in return for the experience they could give me. It worked, and I did programming in Bash and Perl on Linux for a few companies, just small projects, but it was enough to build up my CV and start approaching companies for paid roles.

The first role I applied for was Linux Engineer, and I got it. The pay was not great as I was new in the industry, but I used that role to get as much experience as I could in every area of the company for 3 years. After 3 years I was running a server farm of around 1000 Linux Servers, and I had also gained experience in programming by writing tools to automate processes such as analysing output of the backup logs from MySQL.

After 3 years I took another job as a Server Engineer, this time managing Windows and Linux, and increased my pay by nearly 10k. I learned everything I could about Windows Server, Exchange, Active Directory, how to build rack servers etc, and then moved to a VOIP startup.

I joined the VOIP startup as a Linux Engineer initially, and then later became a PHP Developer after I noticed they had no ticket support system, so Customers were calling to raise issues with their VOIP system and the Support staff were scribbling the issues on notes... then losing the notes... and then the company started losing Customers.

So one weekend at home I wrote a rudimentary Ticketing Support system in PHP/MySQL and presented it the following monday. The company Directors loved it and it was instantly adopted company wide, and I was asked to write an even bigger Ticket System with more features which ended up turning into a fully fledged CRM system.

And so, I became a full time Software Developer.

After that I programmed various languages at various companies including C and Perl. Today I'm at the top of the pile, a Senior Developer working from home, working the hours of my choosing. I get offered new roles all the time even without having an interview as my CV is so strong. If I wanted to I could walk into another role tomorrow and add another 10 - 20k to my pay, but i'm really happy with my current gig as it affords me a really nice lifestyle that revolves around running in the morning and gym at lunch time.

So, my point is, if you are self taught then create your own projects, or maybe work on a project or two on www.codetriage.com once you have some project experience you can then start approaching companies and showing them your work. It may work more effectively in Europe than USA.
