Thailand's culture does not view sex as something "wrong". Only a few generation ago, it was okay for husbands to have "minor" and "major" wives. The king in the past had harems. It is just their culture. To a certain extent, this social norm still exists today. Poor families in Thailand don't "sell" their daughters into prostitution, in the sense of "slavery". They do it in hopes that their daughters find someone they can ultimately marry and have a leg up in society.

There are many women who after working in the gogo clubs, go back to their village with their savings and live a quiet life. Nobody really judges them. Some of the more fortunate ones, find wealthy foreigners and marry then. With the combine resources, these women help their parents live a better life that pushes their parents out of poverty.

I knew a thai guy that went to my university in the states. I visited him after we graduated, and he really opened my eyes. When a thai guy says he's going for his morning massage - a ritual a lot of thai guys do. It means he really going to have sex with the "masseuse". no hang ups.

However, with western culture slowly encroaching. This is slowly starting to change. Divorce rates are starting to climb up. Less women are allowing these behaviors from men while being married or while being courted, which means less men are up for marriage so we have more lonely women. When sex is so cheap, it seems thai men don't get married or want to get married. Ultimately, women do allow such behavior because thai women want to have kids and because of their fertility window. This is the release valve that prevents lower birthrates in SE asia.

Any tourist in Thailand is filled with prostitutes. If you are at a bar they will come up in talk to you. I have talked to quite a few. Almost 100% of the time they are working to send money back to their mom.
