My favorite anecdote from the suttas (the oldest Buddhist writings) is that he flatly refused to create an order for women. Finally he was coaxed into it by incessant whining from his mother and ex-wife, but he said that this will halve the life expectancy of the whole Buddhist phenomenon.

Unsurprisingly, the female Sangha has been extinct for centuries, while the male version survives in an unbroken line to this day. Can't fathom why!

The sage is not describing happiness, he’s describing contentment at first, and possibly also with marriage, but it’s also possible he’s describing joy, which is pleasurable excitement one feels from the anticipation of things to come in the future.

Happiness, on the other hand, is the pleasure one takes from the pleasures available to him, and focusing on that pleasure. To achieve happiness, count your blessings and focus on the pleasure.
