So my family convinced me to watch this movie with them. This scene was really worth it!

What was once a 1960’s comedic expression... a vast, and gross exaggeration of extreme negative female behavior....

Has become what we would consider today to be “pleasant”

Thank God they could have never have predicted companion androids to the degree which we envision now.

What was once a 1960’s comedic expression...

The film is from 1964, but the on stage Broadway musical (and yes it included that song) debuted in 1956 and ran fora good couple of years.

The musical of course is the first to feature that specific "song" -- but the sentiments expressed by the Higgins' character were already blatantly present in George Bernard Shaw's 1913 Pygmalion stage play that the musical & film were based on... and of course the general story of Pygmalion goes back to ancient Greece, and includes his rejection of women (or at least lack of interest in pursuing, marrying or living with then); in many ways precisely because of what can only be called "extreme negative female behavior" (Cf Propoetides).

Point is, this is hardly JUST some "1960's" comedic sentiment.

Thank God they could have never have predicted companion androids to the degree which we envision now.

Cf: Cherry 2000; Mannequin, et al -- and of course Pygmalion (in many of the story's variations/extensions he not only falls in love with the "statue" but it comes to life).

Wow, thanks for the info! There is so much good stuff from ye olden days, back when free thinking and expression was a bit less hazardous.

If I may ask, what do you think was your family's goal in convincing you to watch this film with them?

I mean the way you worded the title sounds as it if was MORE than just a casual "Hey [Freezemeister7895] come watch this old flick with us."

Good heavens!

There is a word for all this....

“Owned”

Good one, old bean!

Yeah really. He makes it sound practically mundane compared to the shit modern men have to deal with from these monsters.

Well that scene made me really laugh, because it is so accurate today. In the 1960´s it probably was a bit hyperbolic, but today its an actual understatement. The not so funny part is that today, you would earn a shitstorm of epic proportions. Still, if my family asks again why I dont look for a relationship, I will point them to Rex Harrison! Classy riposte!

Thoroughly enjoyed, thanks op.

You are welcome!

I enjoyed it. So true. As a young horny man one has no idea how valuable peaceful time to yourself really is.

Ha. I took a date to see this movie last year. She couldn't sit through it and wanted to go buy some beer and sit in a parking lot drinking.

No Lie.

I sure can pick them. :)

Didn't he marry her in the end? Too lazy to research right now, but if so then overall the message is just: let him have his little ideas of independence, if the right one comes along she and his dick are in control.

So the comedy is in that he thinks he is in control but actually the woman is. Sorry for not joining the celebration.

[–]Freezemeister78950 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They get together sadly, but it is kind of an open end marriage wise.

[–]selfism_mike0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks. So he let a woman in his life. I am still good then.

[–]CiceroVoltaire0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it was a different time. today's ending would be different methinks

Normally any interest in musicals is an automatic mancard revocation but we'll let this one slide.
