This type of muscle memory lasts almost forever too. I hadn't done a 1^1/2 flip of a diving board for maybe 10 years and was amazed to land one on the first try.

I learned a backflip purely on grass when I was 15. Definitely one of the hardest and scariest thing I've done. I visualized it for months in my head, went out in a field dozens of times and chickened out just as many times, until finally on one rainy day, the grass was soft and muddy and I just said, "Fuck it" and flipped back for the first time. Didn't land it, but I knew the chances of me dying was slim since I studied the technique very well.

Eventually landed it a few months later. Not sure why I didn't use a mattress or gym. Guess I wanted to be a "hardcore" purist backyard trickster.

But it taught me courage and perseverance like nothing else did and ever has since.

For those interested, the secret to this flip is knowing when to close your body together and when to open it. That's all. The reason is that your angular momentum is conserved after you jump. So when you open yourself up, you rotate slower than when you close your body on itself (because your moment of inertia will be higher). It's pretty much like when sitting on a roller chair and you rotate yourself freely. If you expand your legs you'll be slower. If you pull them back you'll be faster. That should be the main point in training to do this.

If you're not reaching a full flip, close your body up earlier.
