So the other day I was driving to work. On the way over there I was listening to IHeart Radio's Gen X station. And in between Aha's Take on Me and Chumbawamba's Thubthumping the song Macarena came on.

Now for all young bucks not knowing what I am talking about, this song was made back in the early 90s by an Andalusian Spanish duo named Los Del Rio, and as such the original version has a Moorish flamenco flavor to it. It first became a hit in Latin America, but it wasn't until the Bayside Boys made a techno remix of it with a female singer singing the role of Macarena that it really took off in the States and Europe. Basically, it was our Gagnman Style, but multiplied by 10, especially because this came out in the pre social media era when not that many people had internet. If you went to a wedding or prom in the 90s, the DJ would play it and it even had its own dance choreography.

All the song is, it talks about a chick named Macarena who's a party girl who's a seductress and who would love to travel around the world and wants to live in New York and hook up with a new boyfriend. The funniest part (and the girl singing the Bayside Boys version makes it clear) is where they mention she has this cuck of a boyfriend named Victorino, and when he goes out of town she hooks up with his two friends. An interesting trivia: Originally Macarena was supposed to be named Magdalena. In Andalusi culture, Magdalena is used to describe women that are, to use a generous term, a tad too sensual, playing a nod to Mary Magdalene.
