Strange place to ask this, right? There are a lot of smart dudes here and I'm sure some of you have been faced with this choice.
To make along story short, I had a crown go bad last year and had it replaced. I later found out via second opinion that the new crown does not fit right.
The tooth rarely hurts. It is sensitive and sometimes hurts when I drink something cold or when brush it. A few weeks back, I had a couple of episodes where it hurt for a couple hours each time so I went ahead and booked a root canal. That said, it doesn't hurt 99% of the time so I'm not sure whether to go through with this or not.
The cost of a root canal is 1200 plus another grand for a new crown. Pulling the tooth would be less than 500. Replacing it with an implant (if I went that route) would cost at least a few grand.
I don't have too much faith in dentistry so I just kinda wanted to get your opinions on this situation and the industry in general.

Go see a biological dentist before you do anything. Part of the initial visit may be covered by insurance, but if not it's still worth it to make sure you do it right. They will do a biomeridian test. At 40 you are more susceptible to infections as you age, so a root canal can be risky

The best thing you can do is research it. Traditional x rays don't discover infection as well. You start with a biomeridian test to see if it finds an infection, then they may do some type of cone imaging. At the very least it can give you more insight into what you should do
