Strange place to ask this, right? There are a lot of smart dudes here and I'm sure some of you have been faced with this choice.

To make along story short, I had a crown go bad last year and had it replaced. I later found out via second opinion that the new crown does not fit right.

The tooth rarely hurts. It is sensitive and sometimes hurts when I drink something cold or when brush it. A few weeks back, I had a couple of episodes where it hurt for a couple hours each time so I went ahead and booked a root canal. That said, it doesn't hurt 99% of the time so I'm not sure whether to go through with this or not.

The cost of a root canal is 1200 plus another grand for a new crown. Pulling the tooth would be less than 500. Replacing it with an implant (if I went that route) would cost at least a few grand.

I don't have too much faith in dentistry so I just kinda wanted to get your opinions on this situation and the industry in general.
