It's called slang. You know, jargon, colloquialisms, it exists everywhere. It has ALWAYS existed everywhere, and will continue to exist everywhere from now until the end of time. Recent western culture is no different. You have simply drawn negative associations with it due to your likely distaste for SJW types and their use of their own jargon as buzzwords to perpetuate stupidity.
You need to separate your distaste for that group from this one particular facet of linguistics, because at the end of the day almost ALL language begins as informal. There's no "english committee" that gets together to make up words and decide they are "real". People start using words, their usage spreads over time, and if and when they spread widely enough they become "real" (or as real as language can be.) The dictionary isn't an authority that decides what words mean, rather it just describes how people use a particular word.

It's quite common. From my workplace i can say that women go hard on smoking and alcohol whereas males in Russia nowadays tend to more or less abstrain from them. Also the men/women ration is insane (taking into account that a lot of chechen prefer russian women and vice versa). In my city there are basically two times more men than women. So they really let themselves go especially once settled down since they are always in demand.

Especially since the goverment approved the new law which raises the age before men go on pension to 65. There are a lot of regions in Russia where calculated average male lifespan is 60.
