I have a friend who divorced his wife, got all the paperwork, had it all waiting for her when she came home one day. Explained the situation, explained what he was willing to offer her, and that she wasn't going to get a better deal, and she could sign now, or go through the court proceedings at her expense and that she'd get nothing.

And he was generous considering one of their big problems was her massive alcoholism. Agreed to pay her car insurance, give her a car and pay it off, give her 6 mos. of money to go rent a place, pay for some movers to get rid of her shit, and then she's on her own.

Seemed fair to me. It's called restarting your life, that she neglected to do on her own.

No lifetime alimony, no nothing. It was easy to just have the paperwork all laid out, a stack of cash, car title, whatever, and you just make some signatures.

It's all about preparation. But he was ready and "ambushed" her so she couldn't go consult with stupid friends. And made the deal just good enough that it was that or get nothing at all through the legal system and destroy her. So she went with the easiest option.

But as to your question, it only works if she agrees to it. His trick was to make it just sweet enough that throwing it out wasn't an immediate response. A stack of cash really helps at times. Makes things easier.

I have seen it happen.

Slowly move all your most important keepsakes into storage over a period of about 5 years. Make it look like you are slowly purging. Bitches will love this, as it means more room for their shit. I would recommend a shipping container that is under a very close friend’s name (but one who doesn’t like or even hates your current SO), who can then arrange shipping for you at a later date.
Find a country that does not have extradition or any other sort of legal entanglements with the country you are in. If you like the environment, start learning everything you can about that country. Learn their language if need be.
Start moving money into a separate bank account that only you control. Or, if necessary, put that money where it is unlikely to be found (the aforementioned storage). Sometimes you can utilize a bank in your destination country if the rules of that country allow it. Build up a nest egg that is enough to get you restarted in your new place.
If you are in debt, try to cleanse that debt by moving joint assets into it. This also means selling your house to pay off the debt, and get into renting. Play this as a change in jobs, in that you have to be closer to the new job, but that you cannot just sell and buy anew. That you need to rent for now, because things at the new job are riskier, or that the finances just don’t support another purchase. You want to ensure that as few people as possible will want to go looking for you, so resolution of debts is important.
Divest yourself of any physical asset remaining. You don’t want your name on anything more than absolutely necessary. This includes, if possible, bank accounts and credit cards that are held joint. If possible, turn it into physical cash that you can squirrel away as well.
Research cash-based transportation to your new country. Many to most places will only take credit cards, you may have to have a friend help you open up a pre-paid credit card under a fake name in order to pay for an airline ticket or something like that.
Come up with a plausible method for “disappearing”. Your car, in an unusual spot and discovered burning, would be a great basic idea. I am partial to the idea of saving up blood until there is about 2-3 Litres (freeze in small amounts, having it drawn every week), then using that blood inside your vehicle to stage an “accident”. Melt blood, put into a plastic bag or balloon, hang that right about where you would sit and use a small explosive to destroy the car; causing the interior to be painted in your blood and making it look like foul play (just no body). That way, police have a blood-filled vehicle and indications of a homicide, while you skip off.
Immediately head off to that country with just enough money to survive for a month or three, and once there have your friend send you your shipping container.

The devil is in the details, obviously this is nothing more than the most meagre and minimal of overviews.

Homicide. But seriously, the best thing to do is make sure you do not have kids and make certain she has her own income stream. You might not avoid alimony completely, but you can probably make it temporary. It's also a good idea to throw in the towel before the marriage hits the five year mark.
