I have a half acre empty lot where I started a garden several years ago. Now I have okra tomatoes, all kinds of peppers, strawberries, black berries, grapes, squash, zucchini and yellow, sweet potatoes, watermelons, cantaloupe, artichokes, lemons, persimmons and many different herbs. I have a winter garden going now with cabbage red and green, broccoli, cauliflower, 6 different kinds of lettuce, Brussels sprouts, spinach and collard greens. It requires substantial effort but the amount of produce more than makes up for it!

I tried this idea not long ago and my experience wasn't good.

Most jobs are mechanized. You need to own the land. Initial investment is high. You need a buyer/market you can trust or your crop can just rot. Country people didn't like me being from the city.

Just treat this as any investment project before taking the plunge.

Live in the country? Definitely, because it's cheaper and less stressful. Save your money and retire as young as you can.

Small scale farming? Nope
