Usually you double pole in alpine bindings, not Nordic bindings because efficiency.

Ah, I see. Well, it's a more energy conserving technique as it doesn't use the legs as much. So he probably used it because he had a clear lead, no one chasing him behind. If someone was chasing him, it would be smart to use his legs for greater speed.
