I envy you. At 18 im still going thru the motion in school. After i graduated i still have no aim. Id say if you have a goal, and no alternatives, go for it. Either you hit it. Or you missed and hit something behind.

In regards to a career that's not true at all. You can always switch paths. I spent a huge amount of time learning math, learning to code, etc. and I became a damn good programmer. Best in class. I got a good high paying job, and was doing very well for a number of years. However, after a number of years, I started to realize that most other programmers in the office absolutely hated me.

Here's how that came about, is that they would write shitty code, break libraries that used to work perfectly fine and then somebody else that needed that library to work sent an email out to everybody asking if anybody knew why it wasn't working as expected anymore. I would respond and tell exactly who broke it, when they did it, and the exact code commit that broke it with. To which many people "reply all" agreeing what garbage code that was and that it should be rolled back and removed.

Some coworker, who was actually with the company for many more years than me had become notorious for breaking shit. One day he came up to me and got right in my face, literally between my face and my computer monitor while I was working. He says to me "Why do you keep calling me out like that?".. And I just straight up told him that if you write shitty code I'm going to call you out. That's how it works, bro. Stop breaking shit. To which he took it very personally because he lost a promotion because of it. In fact, I got his promotion and I didn't even ask for it or apply for it. This guy then made it his life mission to try to get rid of me. He would create team meetings and "accidentally" forget to invite me to the meeting. Then during the meeting he would say I skipped the meeting, or said I didn't think the meeting was worth attending, or that I didn't agree with the meeting topic, etc. Just complete BS and a toxic work environment.

Anyway, I ended up resigning due to the toxic work environment and leaving that career path for one in Enterprise level product support. When I find something that breaks and I call it out the why&how it happened ("root cause") I'm a damn hero. Not one person thinks badly of me. I'm far happier here because I do pretty much the same stuff but instead of hate from coworkers, I get endless amounts of respect and appreciation. I haven't written a line of code in over 5 years now.

My point is, you never know where you will end up. Even if you're certain what you want to do, such as I was when I became a programmer, it might not be the best thing for you. For reasons that have nothing to do with you.

Here's the deal.

First, you are legally an adult, but your tool set is not fully developed. Biology is not linear, so your brain could be 19 and your body 17. You won't be "grown up" for about 5-10 more years.

Second, you will not really know what you want until you have actual painful experience in the real world. On your own, without your parents.

Third, because you like doing something does not mean you can compete. Get ready to fight for what you want with hundred of millions of others who "love video games." If that doesn't sound appealing, then go find the thing you will move mountains for. You will be competing there too.

Finally, and most importantly, start learning to THINK. Your life is a series of sprints, each one different from the last. Figure out this one quickly, do it, and learn from it for the next one.
