Why do divorced men pay alimony?

In the old days, marriage was about splitting responsibility. Men worked long and hard jobs to earn money while women took care of the home, chores, and kids. It made sense that in such an arrangement, the man would pay the woman in case of divorce since she had little to no skills applicable to employment and would have a very difficult time surviving without it. Alimony is just an archaic concept that has somehow survived to this day.

Of course things like that happen. And the worse it gets for men, the more they will lash out. You can only stretch a rubber band so far before it breaks.

Yes... but good luck on that... that is a major risk that could destroy your life even more... especially when there are kids and other family etc... you would have to be a literal sociopath to get away with something like that... I’m sure people do... but it seems Like an obvious red flag - is there a motive? Uhh yea the ex was paying alimony... to easy to go after... the risk reward is crap too... maybe in some countries where the punishment isn’t life in prison or death penalty... and if you are willing to do that, why not just move to another country and ghost everyone...

We don’t actually have a choice... the law comes after you to pay... you can be jailed if you don’t... also if you decide you don’t want to work as hard anymore they will impune wages to you... which basically says, you should be able to make X based on your skills etc so we are going to require you to pay that amount whether or not you Make that much... it goes on as assigned debt to you... literally you are a slave to the ex and the state...
