The only benefit to a woman taking maternity leave is the work environment becomes more bearable without her and more work gets done. I got more stuff done on my own when my wife separated from me than I did with her with me, and that’s with taking care of our 3 kids by myself. I’m not even exaggerating. Also my savings were exponential, cause my wife was more expensive than all 3 kids put together.

At work, the only thing that matters is work. If you have outside interests or hobbies such as pets, drinking, or children, that has nothing to do with work and it is inappropriate to use those as excuses not to do your job. I've seen it my whole career, women playing the baby card and the single people mostly men have to pick up the slack. That's why you get such resentment against parents in the workplace, particularly single mothers who (in my experience) are much more prone to behaving this way.

I missed an entire year's worth of lessons at my college (slack had to be picked up by another teacher) because the teacher took almost 7 months maternity leave.
