I was engaged to be married once. when she started this shit with me I said "you can say you don't want me to do something, but you can't tell me what I can and can't do. unless it goes both ways. end result, I'm still gonna go do what I want". I ended the engagement one month before the wedding. got the rings back too. converted the rings into a nice mountain bike.

To be fair, I think some guys USE that simply as a convenient excuse (one that gives them an "out" without having to come off as "rude").

Why? Because it WORKS; and basically no one* ever questions it.

Hell, I'm not married (never have been never will be) and yet have used a variation on that as an easy [painless & QUICK] way to get rid of some pushy salesmen: "Nah the wife'd blow her stack if I came home with that [TV, machine, motorcycle, etc]." -- sales guy always responds with something like "Yeah, I hear ya!" and then leaves me alone.

Married guys of course can take advantage of that in even MORE ways -- they can use it as an "out" or "excuse" for any invitation to some event or activity they don't want to attend -- the "I'll have to ask the wife/gf" is NEVER questioned. (Whereas guys who are KNOWN to be single... don't have that excuse; we have to be a bit more "creative.")

* Other than maybe single guys. To which the married guy just responds "you wouldn't understand" ... and that's pretty much that.
