Guys do it too. Some people constantly need to be talking. If you don't mind silence some people will think you're awkward because you don't talk much. These people usually lack self-awareness and don't bother to think that maybe they are the awkward ones. Always having to talk because they can't handle silence.

My ex was the worst for this. Just inane, incessant, mindless chatter all day from the moment she woke to the moment she slept. It was like every thought that entered her head must be verbalized. Sometimes she'd talk for several minutes, none of it connected:

"oh i really don't want to go back to work tomorrow.... I'm cold... I was thinking we should take a holiday to the beach sometime perhaps somewhere up north... I need to ring the bank today... oh who's messaging me?.. i love this song... blue looks good on you..."

It was draining.

My mom can hold conversations with herself.

It is incredible to watch. She can jump from topic to topic at breakneck speeds without another person speaking a single word.

When she's not speaking, you can tell she's straining herself by not doing so. Eventually the silence overwhelms her and off she goes once again.

I love her, but it is completely bewildering to me how she's compelled to keep talking.

This is a cultural thing. I'm from a Nordic culture and we're notorious for not knowing how to small talk or say things that convey little to no info. People from southern cultures think we're cold and rude, while we find it very odd when southern people fall into a crazy panic when they've had to stay silent for five minutes.

One key element for being my friend, especially if I'm driving, is being comfortable with silence. Now, the people I keep as close friends are interesting, and I don't see them so often that conversation gets stale. If I'm spending time with someone, there is a purpose to it. Be it working on some project together, getting or giving advice on a particular situation, or sharing a hobby or event, there is a reason I'm engaging with the person. My ex needs to talk, she just talks constantly, especially when shes drinking. Met her for a drink the other night, we'd been co workers for 10 years and wanted to talk buisness a bit. What a complete mess, not only is her life spiraling out of control, she spent the whole time either flirting with me, or getting side tracked talking about people and events I know nothing about. Two years ago I was completely devastated to lose her, now I'm just happy to have piece, quite, and none of that drama in my life. If someone is making idle chit chat, I simply ignore it and don't respond. Want me to engage in the conversation, have something interesting to say. If that makes me cold and distant, so be it.

True. It sometimes looks like they are having their very own flavour of prairie madness, even in a very urban and crowded setting, if unable to shoot shit for more than one minute. Truth be told, I've never been able to understand this phenomenon.

Also explains why they're not allowed to go hunting with the men in older cultures. Taboo wasn't nothing to do with anything mythical like upsetting spirits or whatever, or even causing rivalry issues among the men, but more like "Shuddap hon', you're scaring away all the game. Sssshhhhh... Please..." And nothing to be found for miles.
