Depends. If the woman herself really doesn't want kids, but likes dogs, that's fine. If she does want kids and replaces them with a dog because they cannot find a man to foot the bill, then it's an issue. They're going to baby the hell out of that dog.

Dude I love that you brought this up---I also can't help but think that this is some indicator of something amiss in society. The term "dog-mom" makes me cringe every time I hear it!

I think modern American women find dogs suitable because they:

1) make them feel needed and important to something in the universe

2) they love unconditionally, which any smart man is no longer willing to do

3) women can get away with not really "raising" (training) dogs because the stakes are low and no one will really look down on you if your dogs are out of control because they are usually leashed (no doubt women would leash men and children if they could). How many single women do you know with really well-trained, well behaved dogs?

For me, the single dog mom is getting to the same craziness category as horse girl.

I've seen many single women here in NYC with small dogs. Now if that has something to do with the declining marriage rate I don't know. But it is an ever present trend I have witnessed.
