I lived in the Mojave Desert for a few years as a bit of a hermit. I found the experience enriching, and am more focused as a result.

However, if you want to reintegrate at some point in the future - it gets more and more difficult. It's not necessarily a bad thing being an outsider and feel apart from everything, but it is a bit isolating. On the other hand, when social interactions are 100% voluntary and you can leave at any time - it tends to improve the quality of those interactions which you do have.

It has a stark and harsh beauty, the desert. It feels good to be away from the crowded, green mass of life. It makes what life exists that much more precious when it is scarce. It can be haunting.

There's also a lot of wash-outs and drug-heads in the desert; places where poor people live because there's nowhere else to go. I also met a lot of religious people in the desert.

The desert is a place hostile to life, and is a reminder of death and time and naked erosion. To commune with death is a spiritual exercise and can make life comparatively more valuable due to the understanding of scarcity.

I encourage you to avoid people.

And to talk to yourself.

You may find a kind of resilience in isolation.

The Family Unit is the ugliest institution on the planet, even worse than marriage. I no longer have family as I cut all contact.

I'm a free man. No worries, no fear, no anxiety, no problems. I move from job to job and apartment to apartment when necessary. When I finish a contract in my career, I travel the world exchanging farm work for food and shelter and then come back and do it all over again wity plenty of money sitting in the bank. I experience women as I meet them and nothing more.

Depends.

In my experience family caused me a lot of hurt and pain. So the day I ghosted them was the start of the healing. Now in hindsight years later it was the best move I could possibly make.

I'm not saying this approach is for everyone, but I had very good reason to break away, and this was after I put in years of considerable effort which was not reciprocated.

Acquaint yourself with the maximum number of skills. Solar power, basic tools in farming, mechanics and the math formulas around it. Take baby steps. Start living without internet for a week, to begin with. And then the phone. You get the drift, right? It takes a lot of time but once you start building up experience, it's easy.

And start thinking about living off the grid.

I left my family for 12 years. Tried to reconnect for a few years but then realized that my toxic mother has essentially poisoned them all to me. I'm in the process of trying to disappear once agin. It's too bad because I do like my father but she has her claws into him so it's not worth it. I don't have the energy to constantly fight her bullshit and she is a master at turning other people against me. Fuck her.

I don't ghost my family but i stay away from them mainly from my parents. I hate them both and they know about it. I visit home once a year when i have free time only to attend the family dinner and just check on them.

I do not keep in touch with most family members. I have several that still try to send me cards or gifts for holidays or birthdays. Those family members are good people, not for sending me cards,l they just are. I hate receiving gifts and it's hard for me to respond to that.

They are all on my mothers side. My fathers side doesn't communicate with me. They are weird so I don't actually care.
